Day Ten - Monday, May 11, 2009

We got up early (as usual) but this time to get to the Toyota dealership for 55,000 mile servicing on our 2007 Camry Hybrid. We found the dealership with no problems and got the job done. Then we took a drive around the campus of the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV). It's big! It's very metropolitan. It does not have much of a sense of continuity from one building to the next. It's within visual distance of the Las Vegas Strip. And it has big financial problems. The governor of Nevada has proposed a 37% cut to higher education, and you can just imagine all the lobbying and activity that is going on to stop that proposal. Tuition increases definitely are in the future for Nevada system students!

By the time we got back to the hotel, I was feeling really bad, and we ended up spending the rest of the day in the room - sleeping and napping to kill the bug as best I could. The only highlight was remembering to watch the fifth and final episode of "We Shall Remain," the PBS series on Native Americans. This episode is the only one that covered a time period that we experienced. It was about the Wounded Knee takeover by the local chiefs and the leaders of the American Indian Movement (AIM) and the siege by the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the FBI in 1973. It is a sad story but it also was the final stimulus to coalesce the Native American community to reclaim its heritage and renew its practice of its own spiritual traditions, its art, and is culture.
